  • Marlboro/Philip Morris Expand Empire
    .
Philip Morris has been test marketing Marlboro brand snus in hopes to expand on their "heritage of Marlboro cigarettes." Marlboro snus pouches are a combination of a flavor strip and dried tobacco and are being marketed to adults looking for smokeless tobacco alternatives to cigarettes. (Philip Morris Press Release June 8, 2007)

Youth Sleep Problems and Tobacco Use
    .
Adolescents who have problems sleeping may be at a higher risk to use tobacco and other substances according to a new study from China. The study found that adolescents (average age 14) who got less than 8 hours sleep nightly, had trouble falling asleep or who had chronic nightmares were at a higher risk for smoking/tobacco use, drinking alcohol and taking hypnotic drugs. The complete study can be found in the Ivanhoe Newswire. (JTO News Summary June 14, 2007)

    Mississippi Group to Lose Funds
    .
The Partnership for a Healthy Mississippi may be no more by the end of 2007 unless alternative sources of funding are obtained, according to the partnership's founder former Mississippi State Attorney General Mike Moore. The Partnership had been receiving $20 million yearly from the state's tobacco settlement money.

The Partnership for a Healthy Mississippi stated between 1999-2004 they had cut high school smoking by 32 percent, middle school smoking by 48 percent and adult smoking by 20 percent.

Since losing funding, the Partnership has said that programs for cessation, law enforcement and counter marketing have been called off and that 33 community partnerships across the state have been eliminated. The agency will still work on helping cities become smoke free. (TheClarionLedger.com June 15, 2007) A full link to the article is listed below.

Minnesota to Sell Fire Safe Cigarettes
    .
Starting in December 2008 all cigarettes sold in Minnesota will be required to be fire safe according to a new Minnesota law. The cigarettes self extinguish when not being puffed on. Supporters of the fire safe cigarettes feel they will cut down on and help prevent accidental fires and save lives. Minnesota DFL Senator John Marty has been pushing for a change to fire safe cigarettes since 1987. (Lacrossetribune.com June 13, 2007)

Save Money and Time by Cosponsoring or Sponsoring Your Own TAP/TEG Training Today!

Why Sponsor or Cosponsor TAP/TEG training?

Cost savings: In addition to paying a reduced tuition, you save on paying travel and lodging expenses of sending someone to training. Plus, earn scholarships to have additional people trained at your training for free!

An Established Program Support Network: Training at least 25 people from a localized area ensures that participants will network and support one another throughout program implementation.

Immediate Results: The power of training a large local contingency is evident in the efficiency of program implementation. Participants who attend training together are more likely to work together as a team to handle local policy changes, action plan development, and supplemental resource acquisition.

Burnout Prevention: Train more people than will be needed to implement programs initially to prevent burnout. Rotate facilitators every 2 years and have back-up facilitators to replace those lost due to turnover or retirement or busy schedules.

Good Public Relations: Training is a great opportunity to contribute to your community. We encourage press coverage. The trainer can be available for an interview and television coverage.

Free Program Consultation: You have the opportunity to spend time with the trainer. You can discuss program concerns during the training and grapple with local issues over lunch. Further, when you sponsor training, Community Intervention provides ongoing toll-free and on-line technical assistance for as long as you need.

Customized Training: We customize the training to meet your local needs. For instance, if you have a particular problem with spit tobacco use, we can spend extra time on it. If girls use tobacco for weight control, then we bring along resources to help. Participants speak very highly of this training and leave the training ready to act.

    Can't Light Up...No Problem!
So, you can't light up because every where you go smoking is banned? Have that craving for nicotine yet the people you are with think spit tobacco is gross? No problem. There is a new product out there called Nicofix. (www.nicofix.com)

Nicofix comes in a gel and claims "there is 10 times less tobacco and nicotine in each application of Nicofix." Nicofix also claims that within a minute your craving for nicotine will be satisfied. Sold in the United States and the United Kingdom and the web. While their website warms of the dangers of tobacco use, it also states by clicking "enter" you are verifying that you are over 18! (Editors Note: Not a real big deterrent for keeping underage tobacco users and buyers from purchasing their products.) (JTO News Summary June 14, 2007)
