Don't Call Me Names DVD
Name-calling is one of the ways young children express their anger or frustration. But to the child being called names, it can be painful and damaging. This program uses vignettes to highlight the reasons behind name-calling and the effect it has on others, and to show kids how to be more assertive so they can stop others from calling them names.
When Caleb is called a variety of names by Janet, he retaliates by calling her names and they end up in a pushing match.
Hector is an excellent student. Kids have started calling him "Mr. Brainy Head," which upsets him. In order to stop the name-calling, he gives incorrect answers to math problems, but it doesn't help.
During Katie's sleepover, Elissa reveals that she is afraid of the dark. Katie calls her "scaredy cat" and Chelsea doesn't do anything to stop Katie.
With the help of older teens and the program's host, youngsters learn how to stop someone from calling them names. Strategies include: tell them how it makes you feel, ask them to stop, ignore them, or ask an adult for help.
Pauses built into this 15-minute program provide opportunities for discussion to explore the motives and feelings involved in name-calling, the effect it has on others, and the available alternatives. For grades K-2. A teacher's guide with 16 student worksheets is included.
